Default Wow... Wireless electricity... What do you think?

Quote:
The trick with wireless power is not can you do it; it's can you do it safely and efficiently, Intel researcher Josh Smith said in an online video explaining the breakthrough. It turns out the human body is not affected by magnetic fields; it is affected by elective fields. So what we are doing is transmitting energy using the magnetic field not the electric field.
This sort of amazes me, as I can't believe someone figured out a way to transmit electricity without wires...

Does anyone think there may be certain safety problems besides the electric fields with this? Is it possible this is completely safe, and if it is, how big do you think this is?

I'm sorry, but I'll be requiring a bit more research before I'm willing to stand in a room with that technology. If it's powerful enough to power a light bulb, I have a hard time believing that it's not going to give me cancer or some such nonsense.

It's big allright, it would fundamentally change the way we live. We now have homes functioning as hubs, soon we can use our technology everywhere and whenever we want. The implications would be mindboggling, we could be at BF at the same time as in real life!

I''ve been pretty interested in this for a while now as well.
I think that the way this is going to end up being done is by using magnets - or magnetic fields, like they mentioned in the OP link. If this is the case, then there most likely won't be anything to worry about as far as being harmful to your health.

I believe that the major obstacle now is to create a more efficient means of transferring power. Because a lot is lost during the conversion... if I understand things correctly.

you know what this means, outlets would be go the way of the dinosuars, also means i dont have to deal with all these wires anymore

Starcraft2 is finally here...i pretty much wasted 10 years waiting for this game! let see during those 10 years i played 4 years of SC:BW, another 4 years of school and 2 years of ever wondering if they have even considered SC2

It's not new, Nikola Tesla was demonstrating it in the 1890s.

QFT. Tesla had wireless electricity, but the people and government thought it was too dangerous.

Tesla has already invented wireless electricity, more than a hundred years ago. He also was a huge proponent of AC current, which we all use today for basically everything except digital applications obviously. Edison was the guy behind failed DC current

DC power would have required a substation like every mile or two if I recall correctly. It's not very efficient over long distance.

Don't we have an atmosphere to protect us from that type of radiation? I'm no scientist, but I'm pretty sure I read about that somewhere.

I misspoke; I meant the Earth's magnetic field. btw, it's the magnetic field that keeps the Van Allen belt in place.
