Well we've already established that Protoss are indeed photosynthetic, most likely avian in ancestry, they hunted for materials (skins, bones), and either reproduce through budding/spores, eggs, or merging (a-la Archon).

I doubt they would reproduce through merging unless somehow the merged being was more than one.. Merging to reproduce just decreases the population thus leading to the demise of the race... or maybe thats why there are so few protoss :P

Maybe they do the funky fungal bump. They simply touch one another, allow genetic material to exchange and after a period the new protoss is simply separated from the existing protoss.

By merging, I meant that maybe two Protoss join together, and then separate into many other smaller Protoss, losing the original pair. Maybe Protoss reproduction is "suicide," which is why they aren't very prolific.

Protoss don't have external genitalia, but that wouldn't stop them from having sex. (Most birds don't have external genitalia either.)

But then why have two separate genders if they reproduce by some variation of mitosis?

The purpose of gender is to encourage genetic diversity. Plants have male and female forms...

We know very little, honestly, about their reproductive cycle. The only basis we have for assuming a female is more important is that we've seen mostly males, and that is because the game is military-based, and the two females we've seen have been in positions of great authority. If an alien culture came upon us, assailing them on a distant planet and came to see that our troops were 99% male, and there happened to be a couple females within command, they might assume the same, but as we know that's far from the truth; females just tend to take a militaristic role far less frequently, due to their...er...nurturing nature.

It could be that the Dark Templar favor female leadership, and the Aurian do not, but just as well, we really know just the most prominent figures; they may have attained their position merely by reputation or action, and not appropriation by gender.

However, just as well, their reproductive cycle could be something we may not even imagine at all; the books from which the idea of a ringworld spawned (for Halo) had a species that technically had 3 genders: 1 male, 1 female, and the third gender was basically a non-sentient species in which the male and female injected their young, and it was sacrificed/killed in the process, but gestation was not possible without it (this was somewhat ironic, as the species was otherwise quite docile, skittish, and cowardly).

Imagine if they reproduced in that fashion. Perhaps their advanced morality is also the reason why they are so less prolific; there is a moral quandry in that they must sacrifice a life they're otherwise sworn to protect in order to perpetuate their species.

No it isn't. Sexual reproduction encourages genetic diversity, but some simple organisms reproduce sexually but only have one gender. Bacteria do this!

Most plants are monoecious (one house), and are hermaphrodites. The long, er, "pen-issy" part of the flower is actually female, the pollen is male).

Protoss wouldn't even need a gender to create diversity, but we do know they have males and females. Maybe females are really rare, which would certainly cut down the reproduction rate.

We shouldn't assume that, because male humans are more aggressive, that this would be true among aliens. It could just as easily be the reverse. There's also nothing to indicate females would make weaker psychics. We also don't know if females are generally smaller or weaker than males; female zealots could actually be stronger.

That causes me to wonder ... do protoss have to sacrifice living to a great age in order to reproduce?

Well, I doubt it. This is barely canon, but in StarCraft: Insurrection Demioch and his daughter both fought on the same battlefield. I think Blizzard doesn't have an answer; the only relationships we've seen amongst protoss are friendships, and we only really get to see that on a battlefield, too.

This was actually my point; I was providing a reference to postulate that we shouldn't assume specific properties about the Protoss, because we don't have enough information to make a substantiated comparison.

I think this is actually closer to the truth; Blizzard is sort of making things up as they go. They made the Protoss and, of course, didn't stop to think, "Hey, how do these aliens bump uglies?"

I think more than anything, our questions will spur them to want to provide answers. I don't think they created these species in whole when they originated them.

No they don't, Bacteria are definitely asexual, and reproduce via a process known as Binary Fission. A few species are capable of single-sex reproduction, but not many.

One question no-one seems to have asked yet is, how do they carry, I mean, do they live birth, lay eggs, or what?

Here is everything you need to know:

http://starcraft.wikia.com/wiki/Protoss#Physiology

According to this, the Protoss feed off of light and are not prolific.
Their sources come are "Firstborn" and the SC1 website.
