Blizzard should seriously take a look at his designs. He makes Zerg look way more menacing whilst not really changing the over artwork:

That's a sick looking infestor...a far better improvement. Mr. Jack certainly has talent...

Although for the baneling I'm not sure I'd want to have claws growing that closely to those acid sacks. One wrong step and that thing could explode itself on accident.

The claws make it more menacing... makes the unit feel reckless and way too unstable.

Roach looks like a freaking tank... very streamlined and armored.

Zergling damn well looks like it's going to rip my arms off. The wings are a subtle hint at its agility.

This is what I meant by realistic looking art rather than cartoony.

There's no doubt that the artwork looks good. However, as the recent polishing has shown, it's the the textures and poly count that limits model quality and not the design art itself (except for maybe the Infestor). It's much easier to create great 2D artwork on paper without having to worry about hardware limitations.

In my honest opinion all his artwork is better than the current in game models and Blizz artwork of the same units. I am not overlooking what you said Mr. peasant, but the in-game models can appear remarkably similar to 2D artwork.

Those are nice drawings, but they're not terribly useful concept art.

Concept art has a different purpose from drawing something. Concept art needs to fulfill a specific need. It needs to give modelers and texture artists a pattern to start their work from.

Compare the Baneling drawing to this concept art. The Blizzard concept art clearly shows the important details: large green backside, rows of green along the sides, an armored spin along the back, 4 legs, and a mount in the front that's low to the ground. All of these details are clear and distinct; it effectively communicates to the people who do the actual work what the unit should look like.

The MrJack Baneling has the same details, but it is a lot busier. There are a lot more details going on in that drawing than need to be, and those details confuse the modelers and texture artists as to what needs to be emphasized and what doesn't. Should the unit be skinned so that as it moves, the green balls actually merge and twist around its body? Do the bone spines surrounding the rear orb need to be visible from gameplay heights?

In short. Concept art has a purpose. This stuff, while nice, does not fill that purpose.

I love Mr. Jack. His art is THE SHIT. I mean, I have all his SC artwork saved. It's totally what I imagine SC should look like.

I'm not sure if you're just trying to argue the opposite for the sake of it.

The baneling concept art from Blizzard is horrible (close to Infestor in bad quality). It doesn't show a texture artist what kind of texture the skin should be, the sacks are just green bulbs, very vague - should they contain some sort of liquid? That image doesn't show you at all, it's just green. The skin is very very cartoony, and given the amount of texture and shader work that needed to have come off thsi concept, there is no way of getting it off this piece of art.

The overall posture of that concept is also very weird and you cannot really see at a glance what it is doing. It's also very random, and has very little construction (bulbs popping out where ever the artist pleases)

Lets compare that to Jack's shall we?

Jack's Zerg have a consistent trait, every zerg combat unit has a sort of top carapace. The more melee the combat unit is, the bigger the carapace. Notice the Ultralisks head is covered with a huge carapace, the baneling's head only has a small one, the roach has a large top carapace going down its entire body, kinda emphasizing that this is to protect it against air attacks, since it cannot attack air. It gives you the feeling that nature has kept this top carapace trait because it works and has continued to weave it into every zerg unit.

His design at a glance makes sense, and feels like there is a "divine design" behind his units. Also, the body of his units are more emphasized rather than the extra tendrils and horns. He also uses horns to much effect by giving an overall consistent use to them (Roach and Baneling have the same horn at approximately the same area)

His art is also a lot more symmetrical, and since nature loves symmetry, it fits the overall natural zerg look. The bulbous sac of the baneling is centered in Jack's art, not randomly off to the side. Notice the roach is really a copy of itself down the center line.

I think as a texture artist, going by Jack's art would be so much easier since he has gone to the trouble of detailing the various parts of the unit. (Notice how the baneling has changed from that simple concept art to a grotesque unique with bulging sacs of goo)

To be honest, you could've provided a lot of the other concept artwork like Samwise's corruptor and I would've listened but the baneling artwork is probably the worse (next to the infestor) I've ever seen some out of Blizzard.

I think you just have your artwork mixed up. What you linked was a very very early concept of Baneling (from the date 2005), they must've reiterated and reiterated until they got to a fairly substantial stage, probably close to MrJack's quality then gave the modeler to work with.
