Default What are the Fundamentals of Islam

I live with people who follows Islam, some goes to war, some don't. Most of the time, people here would generally just want to avoid contact with them.

Do you guys know what fundamental principles Islam teach, that which shapes its follower's perceptions? What are these things that leads followers to certain acts?

How does Islam see things we share in common, how do these precepts make them feel about such things, and what does it propose to be the solution of either promoting or removing certain human affairs and conditions?

Islam is like any other religion, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, etc. There are extremists wherever you go. The modern phenomenon of Islamist terrorism we have been seeing lately is due to the creation of Israel and the Iranian Revolution.

Islam is cutting out the clitoris of little girls. Why are religions so obsessed with the sexual organs?

Well, there all extremists among all humans, not just religious people, there are extremists among atheists too and among all races and in all countries, extremism is a really a human trait, extremism is about following an idea or ideal ( be it a religion or not ) blindly and stubbornly without consideration to anything else and without stopping to re-evaluate what you are doing ... which is something everyone does with varying degrees.

I'd also like to point a problem with how religious people are viewed ( namely Islam here ) ... the problem emerges from religious followers as well as the viewers ( usually not followers of that religion and don't know much about it from good sources ) ... any religion followers usually fall into three categories .. extremists ... moderates .. and the heedless ..

The first are those who follow their teachings blindly with great zeal and never stop to rethink whether it is really what those teachings are about or not ( taking things too literally and out of context ) ... obviously they are the most vocal group ( although intolerant they are not all terrorists )

The second Group are the Moderates ... those who have enough knowledge and wisdom to understand what their teachings are really for and how to apply them in any age or time .... problem is that group is looked down upon from the extremists which causes tension between them sometimes.

The third group are the heedless .. those who carry the title of that religion but practice non of its teachings nor care about it at all .... the are just religious by name .. and while the moderates seek to help them out through guidance and advice the extremists have no tolerance towards them usually considering them infidels.

Of course the three groups are not that sharply defined in real life .. there all all degrees of color here ... some fall between group 1&2 .. some between 2&3 .. and so on.

That said .. the other side of the problem is that viewers from the outside usually don't know the inner workings of all that nor do they know what are the actual teachings of that religion .. and when they see any of the people from the 1st or the 3rd group ( the majority ) they base their judgment based on what they see ( either actions of intolerance and violence .. or actions that totally defy that religion ) and they get a wrong idea and impression that any one else who belongs to that religion must think and act the same way.

In short .. not all those who carry the name of their religion truly represent that religion or its teachings.

Oh, here we go ... sigh .. let me explain

Extremists think it is a must do thing ... and they influence poor uneducated people into thinking that this is the only way to keep the Chasity of their girls.

On the other hand it is debated among moderates that it was allowed ( just not prohibited but not an obligation either ) at some past time for various reasons but nowadays it has been proven to be harmful and not useful, so many decided it is to be prohibited due to its current harmfulness ( following a basic rule in Islam which is ... "preventing certain harm is superior to gaining any possible benefits" ), thus many moderates see that preventing it is better and more reasonable.

That debate has been going for a while since many people in the countryside are poor and uneducated and can be easily influenced to do such things, but the majority of people here view this practice as harmful and unneeded.

As as to why it was allowed in the first place, well i'm not so knowledgeable about this specific subject but what i know is that Muslim warriors and traders used to travel for long months away ( even years some times ) and that practice ( not removing the clitoris but only a small part of it ) insured their wives have their sexual drive dampened while they wait for their husbands' return ( which is something that actually worked and fitted with the conditions and rules of the desert society in which it was first applied in ), but it was also an allowance not an obligation, so when it was no longer needed it became more harmful than useful and thus has been prevented.

*Takes a deep breath* ... ok ... where to start .. you want to know about the fundementals of islam .. i'll try to sum things up.

Islam is built around the idea of acceptance ... accepting and believing that "Allah" is the only god ... accepting that everything that happened was fated ... accepting and respecting all the Angels and all the previous religions and prophets sent by god ( Christianity, Judaism, ....and prophets like Moses, Abraham, .... etc etc ), accepting death and afterlife ( resurrection )

Those are basic fundamentals from which the word "Islam" emerges from ( Islam is derived from the Arabic word "Taslim"=acceptance )

As for the principles ... i''l try to list as much as i can

-Accepting all people regardless of ethnicity
-Not waging war unless threatened, and if so .. not to kill a woman or an old man or a child or an unarmed person, and not to destroy or burn needlessly ( even a tree )
-Fighting Slavery by making setting a slave free a way to repent for sins in the eyes of God.
-Showing Mercy towards the weak and respect towards the old
-Seeking knowledge and through understanding of both religious and non-religious matters ( science )
-Argue with those who don't believe with patience and logic
-Adultery, theft, murder are all crimes that damage society and are punished for ( except in certain conditions .. like theft is not punished at the time of famine .. and so on )

I also know it sounds far fetched ... some might say that no one applies that anymore ... well .. that's why Muslims these days aren't doing so well, in the old times when all of that was applied Muslim nation was one of the most aspiring nations on earth ( it had trade, science, art, literature, military power, vast lands .. in short everything a nation would wish for )

I can keep going but i'd rather you be more specific about a certain subject .. so ask away ^_^

Wow, plenty of discussion and speculation about the "why" question asked by the OP, but nothing really about the "what" that he had asked. I will try to make it clear.

Islam is a religion strongly based in both scripture and tradition (much like the liturgical Christian faiths: Catholicism, Episcopal/Church of England, Lutheran, and Methodist). Just as it is "easy" to be a Christian by holding a few simple beliefs, so it is to be a Muslim, by simply declaring the shahadah ("There is no god but God, and Muhammad is his messenger").

However just as in Christianity you may also be baptized, obey the Sabbath, etc there are things that a Muslim does as well. The most universal of these are referred to as the five pillars of Islam. They are: the Shahada, Salat (prayer five times daily), Zakaat (alms-giving), Sawm (fasting during Ramadan), and Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca).

Of course, as in any religion you will find many people who do not follow one or several of these major tenets, and within Islam you will also find many different schools of law (fiqh), or interpretations of Sharia, the Islamic religious law.

You're best off starting at the five pillars of islam because this will give you a more correct hermeneutical lens.

A bit of advice GnaReffotsirk, don't listen to anything hotelviolet says, he is a psychopath who stalks people here and on msn. He is a preacher of hate, the best equivalent I could think of is that he is an extremist only instead of Islamist extremist he is an anti-Islamic extremist. If you look at his words and rhetoric they are identical to the Islamic extremists if you switch out the words "zionists, westerners, America, infidels" with "Muslims."

If you were a follower of Islam I would also advise you not to take advice from fundamentalists who "truly know" Islam like hv does. He doesn't know shit, he's talking out of his ass.

FGM is actually a native culture in Saharan Africa, and is in no way sponsored or purported by Islam. There are even Kenyan Christians that commit these acts. Yet FGM exists nowhere in the Middle East, Central Asia, or Indonesia. It exists only on the African continent and Oman.

FGM does not especially deplorable though, and seems indicative of some deeply rooted misconception about females in general though. I dunno if its innocent or purposefully ignorant but it strikes me as particularly terrible.

I mean it'd kind of be like slicing your cock off right?

Aye aye aye...

Start with the Five Pillars/Tenets of Islam first. That gives you the basic "I follow Islam because I believe this" portion of it. If you want more detail you need to understand that Islam is a revitalization religion. It was a big success when Muhammad showed up but then died down for a while, only in recent history has it seen such huge growth rates. While it is up for debate as to what is attributed to the growth it is my personal opinion that Islam offers a very strong sense of unity among its practitioners and is a fairly patriarchal oriented religion. The aspect of being violent that you'll see portrayed is often blown out of proportion just like any other violent act.

I suggest picking up "Islam for Dummies" or talking to an Imam in person. An Imam is about the equivalent to a priest or pastor.
