    that's the recursion thing I've been talking about.

    I thought you needed all 8000+ combinations, do you just need a specific set? that makes this very easy.

    I would say it'd just be easier to count them all up yourself, because even if you use some fancy program you still have to input all of the data, and inputting the data requires you to go through every single last sheet. However, if I did this in Excel......

    Fill cells A2 through A201 with the ID numbers. Fill cells B1 through N1 with the option names. Cell A1 should be empty. Fill in the created grid (B2 through N201) with the data from your survey, using "0" in place of "no" and "1" in place of "yes". Then in cell O2 paste the following equation:

    =IF(SUM(B2:N2)>0,1,0)

    That equation says that if the sum of all the data provided in cells B2 through N2 is greater than 0, then the cell which this equation is placed in (O2) will be set to 1. If NOT, it will be set to 0. What this equation essentially does is check to see if there are any yes answers (1s) corresponding to its row. If there are ANY yes answers, it will say yes (1). If there are NOT any yes answers, it will say no (0).

    Now, after pasting that equation in O2, press enter to set it and then re-select that cell. Drag the little black box in the lower-right hand corner all the way down to cell O201 so that it contains the column from O2 to O201. What this will do is copy that equation to the other 199 cells but will keep each copy relative to its respective row:

    =IF(SUM(B2:N2)>0,1,0)
    =IF(SUM(B3:N3)>0,1,0)
    =IF(SUM(B4:N4)>0,1,0)
    .....................................

    =IF(SUM(B199:N199)>0,1,0)
    =IF(SUM(B200:N200)>0,1,0)
    =IF(SUM(B201:N201)>0,1,0)

    Finally, in cell O202, copy and paste the following equation:

    =SUM(O2:O201)

    This will tally up the 1s in the column that checks for who answered yes (1) to at least one question. The number calculated will be equal to the total number of people who answered yes to at least one question. Boom you've got your number.

    The hardest part of this is actually filling in the grid with your data.

    So the recursion did this:

    and the itteration did this:

    We need to combine them, otherwise you only get 1/13th your data set.

    so we need something to generate this:

    A
    B
    C
    D

    AB AC AD
    BC BD
    CD

    ABC ABD
    BCD

    ABCD

    He needs to count if a person answered yes per combination, per person.

    Well, now that I've looked at it again, you could still use my method but with the need of some crazy modifications.

    I'll work on it, but it might be worth doing something else.

    Yeah, that's why I was thinking we have to do that recursive code 13 different times, with a different # of for's in each one (since e.g. the code with two for's does two-letter combinations, code with three for's does all the three-letter combos). Is that wrong?

    No just once, recursive should be able to deal with it. It's hard to think recursive logic unless you do it often.

    This is the base of what was needed. I over-complicated the whole thing with the recursion, nvm that it's just loops and easy so w/e

    the fastest way will be for you to be able to get the text to look like this:

    (true,false,true,false,false,true..........true)
    you can probably export to csv.
