"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time someting like that happened in politics or religion." -Carl Sagan
Just watched Eva. Holy mackeral.

All men begin, and most men end, as prisoners of the authoritative opinions of their time and place.

Neon Genesis Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell are the only anime shows I subscribe to, although having heard all these great things about Death Note I must admit I am somewhat intrigued.
Since I would watch a good anime not because it is an anime, but because it's a good piece of art, sometimes the fanservice/culture gap stuff can be a big turn off. Even NGE is somewhat responsible in its earliest episodes with a lot more emphasis on typical children's humor.
While on the one hand it does present a perfect foil for the darkness and maturity of the second half of the series, I do think sometimes it went overboard and strayed into Pokemon-level jokes territory. GITS was the polar opposite (but not in only the good ways) because it made an effort to be way more of a cult-show than it could have been with just a touch more mainstream qualities to it.
Am I making any sense? And if so, does Death Note sound like something I would be interested in?
I've only seen a few episodes of Death Note, but it's very, very dark. I haven't seen anything that was really funny, except maybe in a black humor sort of way.
I was about to recommend Cowboy Bebop, but then I remembered all of Ed and Ein's shenanigans...although it is a really great series. Especially the episodes that have actual, recurring plot.

Just watched Eva, now watching Deathnote. Then perhaps Ghost in the Shell or End of Eva.
I recommend Bebop. Great dirty fun.Quote
EDIT - does anyone know where I can find a good source to stream Death Note? I can't find a complete copy of Episode 3.

Thanks JT.
Death Note is creepy as hell (and just as dark), but amazing. It's one of the few anime series I've seen that draws one into it without one needing to become acclimated (Eva, Haruhi, and Bebop are some others)
I'm absolutely devouring Death Note. Next up...Ghost in the Shell? I hear that's a pretty good one.

Death note and GITS are the two best anime I have ever seen. I also liked Akagi (though its got a learning curve), though I didnt particularly like Kaiji, Kaiji was just a bit too repetitive in his thoughts.
Cowboy Bebop is quite entertaining while Eva is more thought provoking. Eureka 7 is a decent younger love story type anime that I enjoyed as well.

Just watched Stranger - Mukoh Hadan. aka. "Sword of the Stranger". Pretty good Samurai film.

I started watching Bleach hentai, is this bad?
Take thee this thing covered with that stuff and give it unto that guy, that he may do things with it.
Following some approvals I decided to watch Death Note. On episode 11 right now, loving every minute.
Death Note has got to be one of the few things I've watched where I can safely say "I wish there was more fluff in it." On the one hand, the intensity just doesn't let up, but on the other, I think I'd be okay with it if the show was 2x longer because they inserted more character development stuff, ie. we got to know all the characters better outside of just the Kira affair.
Maybe I'm just bummed that I know I already have the ending sitting right there on my computer?
edit: it helps that L is voiced by Alessandro Julliani, whom I love for his work on BSG and a cartoon that shall go unnamed. He's got such a rich voice for someone so young. Anyway, go him!
double edit: so I get to episode 16, the last episode in the folder, everything is coming to a close... and then it doesn't. Apparently this wasn't a download of the entire series, and it goes up to episode 37, which means I haven't even seen half. Wow. Talk about having trouble remembering the last time I was so happy! I was just prepared to say good-bye to this great series, when it turns out there's more ahead of me than there is behind. Unbelievable!
This is going to be gooood.
