BF Shoutbox?

I know that this would be a bit controversial but I'm thinking a shoutbox might help keep people who post just for the sake of +1ing at bay and allow for less clouded threads. Also sometimes you just want to post something random that doesn't fit in a set thread and it might be worth having the shout box for that no?

I dunno it's just something worth thinking about. I've seen shout boxes work in a lot of other forums what is to stop it from working here? That being said I have no idea what the requirements are for a forum shout box (IE if VB can handle one or if it would tax our server even more) but I just thought I would toss the idea out there.

I support this.

This was brought up before I think. If I recall correctly, it didn't gather enough support. In my opinion, slapping on a shoutbox would decrease the level of actual posting activity. At the moment I wouldn't try to undo activity on BF; we still have yet to claim our former glories before the crash in 2005-2006 and even way before then.

This.

I'm confused as to what exactly a shout box is. Just a sort of "side thread" for random musings i guess?

It's literally a box. Kinda like a mini chat room. It would normally sit either on the side of the page or on top.

I would agree with the notion but Meteora summed up why we most likely shouldn't have one. If we ever get back to the good ol days then sure

Yeah but is blatant +1ing really adding anything to the forum? My opinion of chit chat right now is someone starts a thread and waits for davetherave to defile it then it's a "Let's see how many insults we can hurl his way before he gets wise or a mod closes it" fest. Is that really doing any good for the forum?

At least it's nothing as bad as the days when me and Durandal spammed the forums up. Though there's probably better examples than us two.

Adding a chatbox really doesn't guarantee that it'll solve the "+1" messages popping up everywhere. Rather it redirects that source into the chatbox. We'll still have +1 everytime but just not as much (it is posted at a slower pace). However when doing so we'd also subtract the amount of post activity with those +1. It's much better just to crack the wipe on the particular spammers who tend to leave behind their spam residue than having to bring down everything else with it.

Crack the wipe eh?

First: Look at the reaction this so-called Whip-cracking is having...
Second: Durandal was actually a pretty funny dude for a forum troll and never really harassed anyone
Third: Why not direct +1ing into a chatbox that would not add to post-count thus allowing mods to ACTUALLY police threads because they can direct mindless chatter there...

Durandal was cute but in a dumb-as-fuck way. He wasn't going around telling people how he was going to beat them or kill them or whatever, he was just lovably face-palm-able.

As for the shoutbox idea, not yet. It's a good idea but i think it's a bit premature for that. Once BF somehow recovers from the epic crash (wait for Starcraft 2, then we'll be buzzing), then we can think about an application like this, but until then i think it would be more detrimental than beneficial.

It was by me, and LoA told us no, but I don't remember getting a specific reason.

A majority of the response in that thread was mostly negative, so LoA might have been judging on that. Alternatively the BF staff have their own agenda or have already considered this in the past. Either way, I myself think there won't be any new major new updates until we move to a better server to handle all the XHTML or whatever it's called and used. Hell I don't even know if servers have anything to do with that aside from being unable to handle it or preventing another crash. I just realised how much of a bitchfest that thread was with me.

Your shoutbox proposal, splattered with my bitching.

Dude, Trakens green now :(

I didn't know that.

Sorry, off topic, but still.

generally an IRC chatroom would solve this little issue, however for some reason BF's chatroom never really caught on.
