I had the idea to start a chess game on the forums, the first draft of the rules are below, but I stopped short thinking about the way that players on a team could communicate their strategy effectively. Communicating via PM is inefficient because team members would have to PM everyone on the team to get information around. I wonder if it would be possible to create a sub-forum in the Chit Chat forum (where I was planning to post The Chess Game) dedicated the to "Game".

Once teams have been decided, members on a certain team would be the only members allowed into their "Locker Room" thread in the "Game" sub-forum (I suppose this would work similarly to how the Mods and Staff are the only members allowed into the Staff Forum). There, they could discuss strategy and tactics. This discussion would only happen once the game has gotten into full flow, the opening game wouldn't need much intense discussion.

This sub-forum would also be good because it would allow multiple games to played. Allowing multiple games could introduce a new BF Chess Tournament aspect, winning teams could compete to be at the top of a roster to become the champions (which, in the distant future, might entail some sort of medal underneath winning member's usernams).

The Chess Game(Draft)

The Chess Game

People play chess via E-Mail all the time. Let's see if we can get a game going over the forum. If it works, great! If it doesn't, then to the archives with this thread,

can't hurt nothin'!

Stuff:

-One game at a time.

-Sides of "white" and "black" will be teams of five(5). Total amount of players is based on a "first come, first serve" type rule. Once nine more people say they want to play, then no one else can join.

-I know nothing of anyone's experience, in order to help decide the teams, it'd be good to include a little of what your experience is. Don't bullshit, that ruins the fun. If you suck, don't claim that you're a grandmaster; just don't play. If you want to learn how to play, then I'd advise that you play in real life first. The aim is to get the best possible game going here.

-I'd advise that all participants set up a chess board in their non-cyber habitats that is secure and won't get corrupted so that everyone can follow along and visualize the battlegrounds. Probably you shouldn't play if you can't do this.

-Moves will be based on a rotational rule.

White Army:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Black Army:
A, B, C, D, E

Moves: 1's move, A's move, 2's move, B's move, ...and so on and so forth.

-Posts in this thread will only be posts that designate a move.If you wish to add a comment with your post, then feel free to do so, but what's the point? You risk letting information out about your team's plan.
-The only other posts that will be allowed are those that compliment the other team's moves.

-Players on a team can communicate via PM if they wish to discuss team strategy

Or, maybe, I'm asking too much, with the crash and repair of BF, there might not be anyone who is willing to do this.

What do you think?

-Boots

You can't restrict access to threads based on users, only forums. Keeping it to PM's is a better idea, and you can send PM's to multiple people at once (an Admin may need to enable it for the participants).

You can send pm's to up to 5 people with a basic account. It's just like email use a semicolon to seperate names. And the new pm system even has a handy autofill tool that lets you make sure you spelled the name correctly.

except too bad there is no REPLY-ALL feature....so its basically useless.

btw one time i started a game of chess on the forums where anyone could play a move, it doesnt matter who you are, there are no teams, just once you move you have to stick with that color, but any random walking by the thread can post a move. it was pretty fun, you might try that if this sub-forums thing doesnt work out.

But time delay and stuff would screw up the game and you need a few mods to delete the mistakes.

Pizza, either way we did it, there would still be some bureaucratic overhead. I'd rather not give more work to admins and senior mods and force you to wait on them to get stuff done.

there's no need for that in the one i suggested. the whole thing occurs in only one thread, and there is not really any enforcement necessary.
