So, I play UT 2004 and I absolutely love it. Fantastic concepts for all the game modes (except double domination) and smooth gameplay. The graphics are great, but they aren't distracting from being able to play the game. The best part about them would probably be the awesome anti-aliasing. I've never played another game that looks so smooth.
The gameplay is really wonderful if you like fast paced and hard. It's cool because when you first start playing it's all about improving your aiming and dodging skills, but later in the game you're still presented with tons of strategic challenges and advanced techniques.
Also, UT 2007 is set to come out in... well 2007. The graphics look pretty sick, and I've heard some insane rumors about the kinds of things that will take place in this game (such as physics calculated window breaking). Is this stuff even possible, and will anyone's computer be able to run it? Not to mention the graphical screenshots are pretty unreal (heh).
Anyways, does anybody else play this game? I try online once in a while but I suck pretty bad at it. Also, all you haters who favor realism, dont be redundant by pointing out the fact that it's too unreal, we already know ;)

I have 2k4 and I would play it online but..... well online play sucks :)
I like instagib low grav CTF, that is hella fun. And yet, I never see a place configured like that, just onslaught =\

Really? I've seen plenty of low grav instagib CTF. The only thing I dont like about online play is that everyone hosts the demo maps and not the other ones. That and I loose ;)
Plus, multiplayer is what makes the game so fun. Bots are cold and lifeless and kick my ass :p

In multiplay Onslaught is awesome. I also play the RPG mod in DeathMatch. and I like the bots, they give you a hell of a training on high difficulty levels:)

Back when I played the first UT a lot, I was beating godlike bots in like 1v5.... oh man those were the days...
2k5 > 2k4.
I think.
Edit: Yah sorry I messed up~
2003 was horrible. 2004 was great.

I play and have played all three in the series extensively. 2k3 sucked hardcore but the original and 2k4 were sweet. I still play quite a bit. I love onslaught and the original's assult mode. I'm pretty sweet with 95% of the guns and I'm good at all 3 games though I only really lan with the game no at college. Web play has many hackers. btw 2007 is slated for a fall/winter 2006 release atm.

I absolutly looove 2k4. Its the only game I suck at but will still play. Just because its insanely fun. Im actually not bad against the CPU's and what not..but online I get RAPED. So I generally stay away from online.
If we have enuff people here we should get together and play sometime.
Playing with bots is a hell of a lot better than playing with peoples online.
1. Bots do not bitch.
2. No lag.
3. Bots actually follow orders and complete mission objectives.
The first UT was my first M rated game. Such memories...OF STABBING YOU WITH BULLETS!

Yes... 2k4 was genius... positively one of the best games I own. Nothing like starting on the lowest lvl of difficulty and working my way up to the top with nothing but a box of snack cakes and a couple energy drinks. Good times.
Ok it wont be too bad running 2k7 due to the genius of its design. You can watch the technical demonstration of the engine here (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6673987266387571435&q=unreal). Seeing this almost brought a tear to my eye for the shear genius of what they have done... maybe you don't know or don't want to watch the video, I'll just say, for a high detail figure, you have one high res mesh (about 8 million polygons) and one low res mesh (about 8500). And you only see the high res but the low res is everything you don't see so you have detail with a high frame rate.
Finally I'd like to add, that I've got my copy reserved already and I hope others do to, and not the version on PS3, I'll stick with my mouse and keyboard and hope that one day I can take on the joystick junkies and show them why the mouse reigns supreme.

Except that bots are really really bad.
One the first few lvls of difficulty this would be true.. however on the ninth lvl they can be a real challenge... ok sometimes they are godlike... hence the difficulty lvl name: godlike. So to say the bots are really bad is to not play it on lvl 9 difficulty settings.
Except that bots are really really bad.
Not in UT. Bots are good. Really good.
But most of the time, yeah, bots suck.

I've always used the auto-dificulty setting (has a different name...). they kind of adjust their playing method by how good your accuracy is and stuff. sure, they don't get smarter but they are more chalenging.

The bots in Battlefield Vietnam can be knifed from in front without doing anything about it. And that's on 100% difficulty.

I've tested all UT games and the bots suck in all of them. Even some of the Q3 bots are better cause well, at least they kill you in about 30sec with their 80%+ mg =P

I think people lack a concept of how good the bots in UT are, considering everything the bots do can be done by a player who is good enough. They don't get any unfair advantages except super fast reflexes ^_^

Play UT against godlike bots. You cant beat perfect aim and nearly instant reaction time. Well, maybe in a 1v1 situation you can.... but not when you play against at least 7 of them.

Yes. Strategy can defeat brawn, but you still have to be good enough to find the right place to be.
And I swear, some of those bots wallhack. Bitch shot a rocket from an angle at which I'd have been unseeable and wasted me.
Xenith
07-28-2006, 01:23 PM
that's because it's not just perfect reaction time and aim they have, they also have prediction. no matter how much you run around trying to stay away from a straight line, they will still narrow their view into the area you move and shoot you like a bird. of course you're not a bird so you shoot back in the meantime. even if they don't have brains they know the map better than you do in the sense that they know where and when stuff spawns.

that's almost suicide

I did play against someone online who was better than godlike bots though. ^_^ I spawned somewhere, ran down a corner, and a shock combo blew up in my face. To this day I have no idea how he knew. :p
Xenith
07-28-2006, 03:41 PM
that's because of the lack of tactics bots have (like it was mentioned before)
splicer
07-28-2006, 04:57 PM
Bots don't have tactics because of pathing. They just go from path node to path node randomly unless there is armor, a weapon, or some powerup... in which case they go after it.When they come across you then the pathnodes are ignored and they go into combat mode. When you are gone they go back to node travel.
say you have a path not here <> a node here <> and here <> they may move from the first one to the second then the third, then back to the first then to the second then back to the first. It is a totally random motion unless there is something they need such as armor in which case that pathing node takes prevalence over all others. So that entails the lack of strategy, however the aim and reaction speed of bots increases with each lvl... and I believe that the power of weapons does as well. So bots can be incredibly hard to beat when you come in contact with them but dumb as a rock when you aren't around.

Ok... so you don't own the game and yet you claim the bots are easy. Wow, please don't speak of things you know nothing. So a game you play has easy bots, not all games are the same. So don't even begin to think that all bots are easy especially when you haven't even played against them. Ignorance is bliss. This postulate is possibly the only thing that can explain why one would be so happy to say the things you have said while never having any proof to back it up.
Ok, back on topic. Even magazines have said that the bots for this game were almost too good. So Unreal is one of the few games to break the trend of incredibly easy bots. Hopefully 2k7 will be the same way and have it be fun to play singleplayer when your stupid router isn't working.

No, but considering you said you don't "know own"... what ever that means, I took it to mean that you don't own the game and you don't know the game. So if you don't know the game you haven't played it. But still, you are wrong on the AI of UT. When they aren't on screen, sure dumb as a rock... but when they are on screen, not only is accuracy nearly 100% but its next to impossible to kill any more than 2 or 3 without being slaughtered. Maybe you are thinking of one of the earlier versions AI but in 2k4 it could be very good.
